ELT Blogging Survey - Reflection in Open Space

After nearly three years, I'm now approaching the end of my Masters. You might call it the 'thick end' as it involves the by no means small matter of conducting research and writing a dissertation. As regular readers will know, I am researching the use of blogs by ELT teachers, focusing on how/to what extent they are used as part of reflective practice and the role the community plays in this. With that topic in mind, I have designed a survey, which I have embedded below. If you are an ELT teacher who has his/her own blog about language teaching, I would appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes to answer the questions and contribute to my research. And please, spread the word - pass the link on to any ELT bloggers you know!

If you can't see the embedded survey clearly in your browser, please click here to see the full version. Thanks to Martin Sketchley for pointing me in the direction of his post on using Google Forms for the survey - worth a look if you are planning on doing any research of your own. Thanks also to Tyson Seburn and Ceri Jones for their feedback on the questions.

  1. Done. And, I'll agree. Google forms is pure awesomeness.

Great work, Dave and look forward to reading more about the results.

    Cheers! -Brad

  2. Google Forms have proven very useful for surveys I've done in the past.

I'm very happy to help out and am fascinated by your topic choice. Hopefully once I get to the dissertation portion of my MA, I will be able to find similarly interesting topics.

    1. Thanks Tyson. The responses so far have been interesting and varied. Everyone seems to get something different out of blogging which is what makes it a fascinating area to study. You still have plenty of time to ponder a dissertation topic - I recall when I was at the same stage as you, I was thinking about blended learning programmes for children!

  3. All done, Dave, as you know. Keen to help a fellow MA student get through his dissertation on a topic I could have easily chosen myself, having had to create and maintain a blog for one of my modules. I hope in the future my blog will grow in readership and influence and that I can reach your already established heights in the blogosphere.

    1. Hi Phil,

It has also been helpful for me to be going through this phase of the dissertation using the same data collection tool as you. Yours is a topic that would be useful for me to research too especially in my own teaching context - many teachers are reluctant/unwilling to use the tech we already have meaning the school is not so keen to invest in more while others say they would use tech more if the school got some newer, more reliable hardware in. That leaves us in a kind of Catch 22 situation so some research into teacher attitudes and what could be done to change them would help... but I'll leave that until my dissertation is done!

As for the blog, it all comes with time and interactions with people through other channels (Twitter, other teacher's blogs etc) - that's what an initial analysis of my survey tells me anyway. :)
